The questions we most often get asked are ‘how does FreeWills work?’, ‘is FreeWills really free?’, and ‘will it be legal?’ so we’ve put together a few notes below to help and reassure you.

How does FreeWills work?

There are three simple stages to FreeWills:

  1. The system will ask you questions online and you just follow the guided process. It’s very user-friendly, and the questions are in plain English. The system will ask you to choose executors, guardians for your children and pets, if applicable, who you would like to inherit your possessions and any special requests around your funeral arrangements. Step-by-step help is provided answering any questions you might have, and the process typically takes around 15 minutes.
  2. Review your Will and print it out. It will detail everything you have supplied or requested above. You will need a printer.
  3. Sign the Will. There is a legal process to this and a useful guide to help you – you will require two witnesses to make your Will legally binding. At this point you can store your Will or use a service to store it for you. The system will offer guidance on storing your Will at the end of the process.

Is FreeWills really free?

The simple answer is Yes. All Wills created via the FreeWills website are 100% free. There are no catches. This is because FreeWills make a small commission on partnerships and advertising revenue, there is no charge to you as a customer – not to register, not to complete your Will, nor to download your Will. The entire process with FreeWills is free of charge.

Is a free Will, that I’ve created myself, legal?

Again, quite simply, ‘Yes’ it is 100% legal. As with all Wills, you must be aged over 18 and of ‘sound mind’. There is no need for you to use a solicitor to draw up your Will – most often the solicitor route is chosen for convenience. FreeWills have worked with many expert legal advisers to make sure their Wills are fully legal in terms of the wording. Your chosen witnesses must not be beneficiaries of your Will and you must follow the process for getting it signed. This process is clearly detailed for you to follow.

Don’t I need a solicitor to create a Will?

As outlined above, the answer is quite simply ‘No’. You do not need a solicitor to make a Will. For a Will to be legally-binding, you must be aged 18 or over and be of ‘sound mind’. Additionally, you need to sign it in the presence of two witnesses (who can’t benefit from your Will) the they must add their own signatures. The correct wording and the correct signing and witnessing of the Will are what makes it fully legal.

Remus is a registered charity founded in 1983 and FreeWills is rated 4.9 on Trust Pilot with over 4,300 reviews.
