Animals We Have Rescued
Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary has been providing rescue, rehabilitation and lifetime care for horses, ponies, donkeys, sheep, goats and cats since 1983 – and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023. The Sanctuary is located near Ingatestone in Essex but has rescued animals from all over the South East, and in some cases, other parts of the UK. The charity receives no government funding and all fundraising is undertaken by the Remus Team and its supporters. There are many ways you can support Remus; we have shared lots of information here on our website, including on this page ‘How You Can Help’.
Remus provides a safe environment for animals that have been victims of physical and mental abuse, whether from ignorance or malicious intent. Sadly, whatever size of animal, if there is an unscrupulous owner, it will be mistreated.
Like humans, many animals are living much longer nowadays – with the right care. When the Sanctuary was first formed, 15 years was a good age for a horse but now it’s normal for them to live to about 30. Since then there have been so many veterinary advancements that we’re a lot better equipped, but it’s also a matter of lifestyle. Learn about our pioneering approach with elderly horse care.
We have over 100 animals in our care including over 70 horses, 8 donkeys, 2 mules, goats, sheep and cats. Many of these animals are on long term medications which are costly but literally mean the difference between life and death for these animals, and we would be grateful for any donation you can make to help them.
