Co-op Local Community Fund

We’re delighted that Remus Horse Sanctuary has been chosen to benefit from the Co-op Local Community Fund but the Fund closes on Saturday 24 October and we need your help to raise as much money from it as possible.

At a time when funds for community groups and charitable organisations are becoming more difficult to access, we’re incredibly grateful for this opportunity to make a real difference in Buttsbury, near Ingatestone in Essex.

We’re raising funds to improve the condition of our paddocks, to give the animals a better quality of life and enhance the visitor experience.

To help us raise vital funds, we’ll be relying on Co-op members. When a member buys selected products or services from the Co-op they earn a 5% reward for themselves, with a further 1% for local causes like ours.

The Co-op is looking to support organisations that make a difference in their local communities by protecting and improving community spaces, helping people reach their full potential by developing their skills or promoting health and wellbeing.

Co-op members can choose us as their local cause by visiting https://membership.coop.co.uk/causes/34263.

We really hope that people will visit the website and donate their 1% to us.

If you’re not a member and would like to support us, you can join at your local store or online at www.coop.co.uk.

When a community comes together we’re able to achieve great things, so we hope you can help promote our project!

Thank you!

Shopping at Co-op Stores offers Life Saving Paddocks for Horses

Sue Burton, Founder of Remus Horse Sanctuary, is delighted to announce that the Co-op Local Community Fund is now supporting the charity through to October 2020. The project supported is to create hospital paddocks for sick and debilitated horses, such as those suffering from a condition called Laminitis.

Laminitis is a prevalent, extremely painful condition in horses that has significant welfare implications for owners. It is an inflammatory condition of the tissues (laminae) bonding the hoof wall to the pedal bone in the hoof. It is often a recurring condition. In excess of seven percent of equine deaths are linked to laminitis, with many animals being euthanised.

There are a number of risk factors associated with the development of laminitis including the spring and summer months, obesity, being a pony rather than a horse, older age and hormonal diseases such as equine Cushing’s disease (pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction; PPID) and equine metabolic syndrome (EMS).

Ms Burton says: “A lot of our horses have laminitis as they have spent many years not receiving the care they should. These special paddocks are expensive to create and maintain but they allow the horses a quality of life that would otherwise be denied them.

“Every year these paddocks need new woodchip flooring which allows the animals (a) to be kept off the grass which would otherwise add to the problem (b) means they can be kept outside with their friends and can walk around rather than being box rested, and (c) ultimately is very often the difference between life and death for them.”

Every time a Co-operative member buys selected own-brand products and services, 1% of the money they spend goes to help support local causes in the community, such as this project with Remus Horse Sanctuary.

The stores in the immediate vicinity of the Sanctuary include:

Store Name Store Postcode Business Unit
Billericay Queens Park CM12 0UA Food
Billericay CM12 0RP Food
Billericay CM12 9BQ Funeralcare
Blackmore CM4 0RU Food
Hutton CM13 1LZ Food
Ingatestone CM4 9EA Convenience Store
Pilgrims Hatch CM15 9PD Food

Ms Burton concluded, “Laminitic paddocks are very much a life-saving opportunity for many of our animals who deserve a right to some good quality life after all they have endured but it does come at a significant cost.

“We’re absolutely delighted that Remus Horse Sanctuary will be able to access this funding opportunity and I’d like to thank everyone involved for their support.”

Co-op Members Care About Remus Horse Sanctuary

Sue Burton, the Founder at Remus Horse Sanctuary, is delighted to announce that the Co-op Local Community Fund is now supporting the charity through to 26 October 2019.

The project supported by the Co-op Local Community Fund is to buy some replacement field shelters – which cost £4,500 each – so that the charity’s animals can shelter during sudden inclement weather such as the Beast of the East, gales, flooding which is common-place in the local area and the extreme heat experienced during the Summer of 2018.

The stores in the community local to the Sanctuary include:

Store Name Store Postcode Business Unit
Billericay Queens Park CM12 0UA Food
Billericay CM12 0RP Food
Billericay CM12 9BQ Funeralcare

Every time a Co-op member shops at the Co-op, 1% of what they spend on Co-op branded products and services helps fund community projects. Members can shop at any Co-op Group stores across the UK to raise money for the cause – it is not just restricted to the local stores mentioned.

The Co-op Local Community Fund helps support local projects that the Co-op members care about. Since its launch in 2017, Co-op members have raised £39 million pounds for over 12,000 local causes.

Sue Burton said, “We’re absolutely delighted that Remus Horse Sanctuary will now be able to access this funding opportunity and thank everyone involved for their support.”

This includes information about our cause and the project we want to complete – in this instance we would like to buy some replacement field shelters costing £4,500 each, so our animals can shelter during sudden inclement weather – such as the gales, flooding and extreme heat that we’ve experience over the past few years.
