HEALTHY HORSE EQUINAR – FROM FOAL TO VETERAN

Ingatestone, Essex – Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary’s, annual education seminar will be taking place on Sunday 27 September at The Holiday Inn, Brentwood. The equinar will be the ideal opportunity for horse and donkey lovers and owners to learn about the needs of their horse, pony and donkeys – young and old – directly from the experts.

Early Bird Tickets are now available until month end at the discounted price of £30 and can be purchased online from the Remus website. Tickets will include light refreshments and a seminar handbook. Final timings to be confirmed, but likely to be 10am to 4pm.

Some of the top experts in their fields will be speaking on various topics including Equine Metabolic Syndrome, Laminitis, Dentition, Nutrition, Holistic Care, Colic, Cushing’s Disease and more.

GET ‘BLOWN AWAY’ AT REMUS HORSE SANCTUARY

Ingatestone, Essex – Time is running out to secure tickets for the training at Remus Horse Sanctuary with Reiki expert Kathleen Prasad. In conjunction with SARA, the Shelter Animal Reiki Association, the workshops will be held at the Sanctuary near Ingatestone as follows:

Everything Animal Reiki – a 3-day training course including certification – Thursday 27 to Saturday 29 August commences 9am

SARA was founded by Kathleen Prasad (Animal Reiki Source), and Leah D’Ambrosio in May 2008, to support the growing number of Reiki Practitioners who wish to establish programmes in their local shelters.

Horses, Saddles and Riders with Free Document Download

Titled ‘Horses, Saddles and Riders – Applying the Science’, the document was co-written by four researchers who presented studies at Great Britain’s Saddle Research Trust (SRT) 2nd International Conference, held in November 2014:

Too often insufficient attention is paid to ensure well-fitted saddles which leads to numerous back issues for the horse, so we recommend this download for more information from the experts in this field and welcome the bringing together of the research and studies.

The document details the research undertaken, along with results, recommendations, diagrams and photographs.

The Saddle Research Trust was founded in 2009 to promote the welfare of the ridden horse and to raise awareness of the widely underestimated issues surrounding saddles, equine backs and performance.

The SRT 3rd International Conference will be held on Saturday 2 December 2017.

REMUS HORSE SANCTUARY WELCOME SPECIAL GUESTS TO OPEN DAY

Ingatestone, Essex – Remus Horse Sanctuary in Essex will be opening its gates to some very special guests at its next Open Day on Sunday 2 August 2015. The fairy tale characters of Snow White, the Hag with apple from Snow White, Merida, Captain America, Doctor Who, Jack Sparrow and Rapunzel will all be joining in the fun and games including the children’s Fancy Dress Competition; prizes will be awarded for the best costumes to the Under 5’s, Under 10’s and Under 16’s.

Entry to the Open Day is £4 for adults, £2 for children and will take place from 1pm to 5pm. The Sanctuary offers entertainment for the whole family including competitions and games, music from local band Midnite Blu, delicious refreshments including sandwiches and homemade cakes, many stalls and a raffle. Parking is available on-site, with disabled access and dogs are welcome on a lead.

The special fairy tale guests are volunteers of the Sanctuary, led by Laura Barnes. Laura, as Snow White [pictured] and the Hag will be running the children’s lucky dip and activity corner, whilst the other characters will be walking around interacting and entertaining the visitors.

The Sanctuary provides rehabilitation and care for over 200 animals, including horses, ponies, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep and cats. The Open Days are a vital source of fundraising for the charity that, due to its location on greenbelt land, can only open to the public for a limited number of days each year.

Ragwort Poisoning

It’s that time of year again, when we need to bring to your attention the perils of Ragwort. Already we are seeing fully-grown stems. Did you realise that Ragwort is poisonous to horses, cattle and other animals, causing stomach pain, breathing difficulties, blindness and potentially death?

Please look out for this yellow plant and eradicate it from any fields where your horses graze.

What is Ragwort?

Ragwort (Senecio spp.) is a poisonous yellow-flowered weed that damages the liver. The effects can build up over a length of time, so even if a horse only eats small amounts this can build up, having disastrous effects – they can also become extremely ill from eating large quantities.

Ragwort can be found on uncultivated ground and in fields across the country. The seedlings appear in the Autumn, rosettes in the Spring, followed by the mature plants from May to October, and they can reach up to 2m in height.

Ragwort may also find its way into hay, so owners need to be particularly vigilant when feeding their animals.

How to deal with it

The Ragwort plants need to be carefully disposed of – burning is most effective – but it is best to speak to DEFRA for advice. You can view and download their useful PDF here.

All plants must be removed.
Remember Ragwort can be harmful to humans too, so cover arms and legs and use gloves when pulling it up out of the field, and avoid inhaling the pollen.
The most effective way to remove Ragwort is to pull the plant up from the roots – special tools are available to help to remove roots.
It is also possible to spray the area – agricultural merchants will be able to advise on suitable products.

Please note that fields and paddocks must be ‘rested’ before the horses can go back onto them – and, of course, all dead plants must be removed.

The horse welfare crisis in the UK continues to worsen. We continue to witness it daily:

The skeletons of horses just left to rot in fields after they have died
Horses dumped dead, alive or dying
Horses in awful conditions with every bone in their body on show

There are worse stories but we don’t want to distress you further.

These animals are so innocent and so noble they don’t deserve to live or indeed die like this. Some of these horses stand tethered in the same place for days, weeks and months on end, never being given food, water or care. Sometimes owners come to see them just once a week, sometimes less often, sometimes not at all.

PONY DAYS RETURN TO REMUS HORSE SANCTUARY

Ingatestone, Essex – The long-awaited Pony Days organised by Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary in Essex, have returned for the summer holidays. Priced at just £45 per person, the Pony Days are suitable for boys and girls aged 9 years and over, with one date for adults as follows:

Wednesday 19 August (Adults only)

Wednesday 9 September

Each day between 10.30am to 3.30pm, children and adults will be ‘loaned’ a pony, to make up its feed up, be taught how to groom and turn it out into the field, shown how to clean out the pony’s stable and make a nice new bed for him or her to come back into later. With lots more tips, information and fun throughout the day.

NOVELTY DOG SHOW IN ESSEX

Ingatestone, Essex – Dog lovers across the South East of England are invited to Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary on Sunday 5 July for its Novelty Dog Show taking place at the next Open Day.

Remus host just six Open Days per year and the July and September dates feature a Novelty Dog Show including fun classes such as: Best Dog Hero – for those that have made a real difference to their owner’s lives – Cutest Puppy 6-12 Months, Best 6 Legs, Most Appealing Eyes, Best Tail Wagger and of course, the ever-popular Best in Show. Entry into each class costs just £1.50 and the 1st – 6th winner receives a rosette. Entries will be taken from 1pm, judging commences at 2pm.
