Winter Feed Appeal Will Save Horses Lives
Remus Horse Sanctuary has launched a new winter appeal to help raise £2,500 to feed not only the veterans and permanent residents at the Sanctuary, but those neglected, unloved and abandoned animals that are either tethered by their necks on waste ground or just left wandering and unwanted with no food, no water and no shelter.
Remus will also be promoting their winter feed appeal on #GivingTuesday – Tuesday 28 November – a date which is all about supporting and celebrating Britain’s charities.
Donations can be made via the JustGiving appeal page online at: www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/rmhs/winterfeedappeal2017, via the Charity website at: www.remussanctuary.org/donate/ or by texting FEED36 £10 to 70070 to donate to Remus with JustTextGiving. Please note that text donations can only be for £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10. However, a donor can donate up to three times per day. £10 is the maximum donation amount for all mobile operators.
Additionally, the charity offers numerous ‘treats’ via its online shop at: www.remussanctuary.org/product-category/animal-treats whereby visitors can buy a bale of hay, bag of animal food, straw bedding and plenty more. A week’s supply of food and hay for a tethered horse in your area will help improve their life and wellbeing for just £25 and undoubtedly help get them through the winter months.
At present, there are more than 7,000 horses at risk in the UK and the welfare crisis in this country continues to escalate year on year with little or no progress – when the mares foal, the problem doubles and so on and so forth each year.
The news regularly features victims of physical and mental abuse and the Charity continues to receive calls daily. Keeping an animal fed over winter will give it a chance to thrive into spring. Forage also helps a horse keep warm. Without the Sanctuary’s help, many animals will die a slow, painful and unnecessary death.
Sue Burton, Founder, says: “Normally the amount of welfare calls we receive dip in the summer months – this year we have remained as busy all through the summer months which does not bode well for the poor horses this winter. We need to get food and water out to abandoned horses quickly and, without the public’s support, we just wouldn’t be able to do that! Every single donation no matter how large or small will be of huge benefit to those starving animals that no-one cares for.
“Winter is especially tough for us”, says Sue, “as we’re entirely self-funded. Without the support of the public there is no way that we could continue – everything costs money and the onset of the cold weather makes it even harder as feed, bedding and heating bills increase.
“I’m really hoping that #GivingTuesday especially will give our campaign a real boost.”

Keep calm its November the 5th
While lots of us, especially those with children, look forward to November the 5th and firework displays, for animals it can be a really stressful time of year!
At Remus Horse Sanctuary we recommend you follow this advice:
- Horse owners should find out dates of local firework displays so that they can be prepared.
- Let the organisers and neighbours know that there are horses nearby so they can set off fireworks away from the animals.
- Horses usually kept in a field may be happiest staying there with their companions, but do make sure the fence is secure in case they bolt, and there are no objects on which they could hurt themselves.
- For horses in stables, check for anything that could harm them if they become stressed, such as protruding nails or loose boards, and play music to mask the sound of the fireworks.

Making a Will is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. And it’s a lot more affordable and straightforward than you think.
Legacies are vital to our very survival at Remus Horse Sanctuary, a fact that most of our supporters don’t realise. To raise some much-needed awareness, we’ve joined forces with Remember A Charity, the largest consortium of its kind in the UK working to promote legacy giving.

With 35%* of people saying they would consider including a gift to charity after providing for their family and friends in their Will, and only 7%* end up doing so, there is huge potential to increase income from legacies. If, together, we can grow the sector by just 4%, we could raise an extra £1 billion for UK charities.
- 7.3% per cent of the UK have left a gift to charity in their will. A 4% increase would raise a further £1 billion for good causes every year.
- We understand that family and loved ones will always take priority – remembering a charity in your will doesn’t mean excluding others.
- A gift to charity in your Will does not have to mean large amounts of money. A small gift can make a very real difference.
A refreshed consumer campaign which launched in 2009 around the theme of ‘Make your last wishes something to remember’ has made positive inroads in changing people’s attitudes. For example, 60% of those who had seen the TV ads said ‘it made them think it was possible to leave a legacy as well as provide for family and friends’.
The annual Remember A Charity Week, which the consortium runs in September each year, gives us a perfect opportunity to promote legacies both internally and externally.

The campaign not only creates enthusiasm among the general public, but also with legal advisors and other professionals who write Wills. Our collective aim is for all professional advisors to prompt their clients to consider leaving a charitable gift in their Will.

Identify the Friend or Foe Plants for Foraging Horses
For horse riders there’s nothing better than hacking out on a beautiful day, whether it’s a crisp autumn morning or a delightful spring day, and enjoying the fresh air and surroundings. And the horse will enjoy it too – especially if they can do a bit of foraging along the way.
Horses love snacking on anything from thistles and grass to oak leaves and wild garlic. And while some plants can be good for them (find out more about useful herbs for horses here), others can be toxic – and they don’t always know the difference. So it’s vital for horse owners and riders to know which plants are safe and which are not.
Make yourself familiar with plants, and whether they are friend or foe to your horse here.
Autumn Update
We and the animals at Remus have thoroughly enjoyed our Open Days this year – and its desperately unfortunate that we’ve had to cancel our last Open Day of the 2017 Season due to the wet ground. Our animals are all doing very well and have been pleased to meet many of their Sponsors over the Summer. We are so grateful to everyone who sponsors our animals and directly help make a difference to the lives of these animals, and we thought you’d like to know how they’re all getting on!
APOLLO is best friends still with Clyde. Also friends with new horse Justin who is having a lot of trouble with his knee which has been quite swollen for some time now due to arthritic changes.
BERT GOAT is always cheeky and loves playing with Sid. We have managed to control his skin condition much better this year so he has been so much more comfortable.
BLOSSOM & AMBER love moving to their day field and eating all the grass and laying under their favourite tree for shade.
BORIS always appears at food time and eats so much food!! Less of a bully now.
BRACKEN loves playing with Jess and enjoys going out in the fields with the other horses.
CANDY is doing very well and is walking so much better since the laminitis flare-ups have been stopped by her special shoes and laminitic specific management.
CHARLIE 1 loves coming in for his breakfast and, despite being one of the oldest and smallest horses here, is always running around being the boss!
CHARLIE 2 enjoys playing with all his Shetland friends and still loves Dante.
CLYDE loves his life with Apollo and has been very accepting of Justin and allowed him to join him and Apollo.
COCO is still eating well and loves her herbs, especially cleavers. She loves to go out on the grass and enjoy her day.
COCO & WILLIAM remain inseparable, they love going out with all the other donkeys.
DAISY SHEEP has had a good year. She is always the first out to get to the food.
DANTE remains best friends with Charlie 2. It’s hard to believe he is the same pony that came in so desperately sick and close to death.
DAVEY loves Harvey and they have become the very best of friends.
DICKIE is very cheeky and always tries to get to the food!
DOLLY 1 is in love with Justin. She screams for him if he moves out of her sight. Sometimes when she goes out in the morning if Justin is out of sight in the field shelter she gets frantic searching for him!
DOLLY 2 is always at the gate asking for food. Has really settled in now and enjoys her life here.
DOLLY SHEEP still gives staff the runaround and won’t be caught!!
DYLAN loves his food and the problem he had with his foot has now improved.
FOUR SHETLANDS (and Marmite) are all very healthy and often you can see them having a good gallop round the fields.
GRACE enjoys her Shiatsu sessions and loves having the time spent with her. She copes very well with her blindness and loves her new outdoor area.
HARVEY still loves his cuddles but really doesn’t like having his medication!! He loves anything that is edible and will bring things to us for attention.
HOLLY loves the company of people and loves her new outdoor area.
HOVIS remains very cheeky and very nosey!!
JESS is a great escape artist and can be very stubborn but that’s the mule in her!!
JET has been on long-term antibiotics but is feeling much better now.
JOEY still loves to play fight with Blue. It’s lovely to see them together in the field.
LACEY still loves wandering the yard and the fields doing as she wants when she wants!!
MALIBU is getting on very well but is starting to get very stiff in her front legs.
MARCUS has been very healthy and enjoys his days out with his Shetland friends.
MINSTRAL enjoys being in her grass field and enjoying the nice weather.
MINTY still tries to pinch Scotty’s feed!!
NAPOLEON GOAT The entertainer continues to be cheeky, especially on Open Days!!
PEANUT loves playing with the wheel barrow when staff are clearing dung from the fields.
PEPPER demands when she wants her bed changed and when she wants feeding – she is a girl who knows what she wants and when!!
PIPPA is still the boss in her paddock. The lump in her neck is still there and sadly our vets cannot remove it because of where it is but she’s happy and enjoying herself.
PIPPIN & IVY are just so sweet and are always together and love being with each other.
ROWAN adores her baby despite how big she has become and won’t leave her side. Sheer devotion!
SCOTTY loves to pull faces at Minty and try to scare him off!
SID GOAT loves playing with the staff – but he can be very rough and often terrorises them!!!
SMOKEY enjoys coming in for his food!! He has been very healthy this year.
SPARKEY has had a good summer and is still that little pony who stands in the barn whinnying to anyone walking by.
STIX remains a cheeky and naughty ball of mischief!
TED loves his dinner and is always the first in!!
THOMAS won’t leave Toffee’s side but also loves Blax over the fence.
TOFFEE loves Thomas and won’t leave his side but she too is friendly with Blax over the fence.
TONY GOAT still loves meeting people and being made a fuss of.
TOSCA has had a lot of laminitis issues with his feet and now wears special shoes to try to help him.
WESLEY & SPENCER still love being the naughty boys of the field and love Hovis.
WILLOW is as adoring of her mum as mum is of her.
WINSTON is one of the naughty characters in the field and enjoys his life!

There is a terrible horse crisis in the country and we work hard trying to help and rescue as many as possible of those poor horses, ponies and donkeys caught up in the crisis. There are thousands struggling out there and we are doing as much as we can to help as many as we can.

Final Chance to Visit Remus Horse Sanctuary this Season
**Sadly we have had to cancel this event due to the wet ground.**
Visitors to Remus’ final Open Day of the 2017 Season, on Sunday 1 October will see children’s entertainer, Magic Dave, joining the entertainment line-up, along with various Princess characters from children’s films, and a children’s area with bouncy castles, music from Midnite Blu and competitions and games to entertain the whole family.
Entry to the event will be just £4 for adults and £2 for children and will take place from 1pm to 5pm at the Sanctuary near Ingatestone. Parking is available on-site, with disabled access and dogs are welcome on a lead.
The date marks the last in a series of Open Days held during the summer months to raise much needed funds for the Sanctuary. Remus Horse Sanctuary is funded totally by public donations and its own fundraising and event activities.
The Sanctuary opens its gates just six times a year offering entertainment for the whole family, with a kids’ corner, bouncy castles, competitions and games, music, delicious refreshments including sandwiches (including gluten free) and homemade cakes, alongside stalls and a raffle.
The Sanctuary provides rehabilitation and care for over 200 animals, including horses, ponies, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep and cats. The Open Days are a vital source of fundraising for us as, due to our location on greenbelt land, we can only open to the public for a limited number of days each year.
Founder of the Sanctuary, Sue Burton, says, “The Open Days are a really important to us, not only in terms of fundraising, but educating people about what we do here.
Visitors will be able to meet the two foals Heidi and Mason, our latest rescues, and learn about our many other successes.”
