Horse Sanctuary Signs up for New Fundraising Platform

Remus Horse Sanctuary has recently signed up to a new fundraising platform called Golden Giving. The change comes following the merger of the platform previously known as ‘Make A Donation’ with Golden Giving.

Golden Giving is a not-for-profit charity giving platform that empowers charities and their supporters to do amazing things. Golden Giving provides essential tools to raise funds, connect and engage with supporters. Golden Giving is the most feature-rich web platform, enabling greater supporter engagement and funds generation, and provides its service at cost, compared with profit making platforms, such as Just Giving, Local Giving, Givey and Charity Checkout.

Golden Giving is run by a group of technology professionals and industry partners, with the mission to enable the best online funds generation and supporter engagement outcomes for charities and their supporters. Golden Giving has a measurable social impact and says, “they help create a stronger society and enhance the prosperity of local communities”.

After 7 years, Make A Donation had been considering how best to move forward in a world of never-ending technological changes. They explored a number of routes to develop the changes required but, in the end, realised that there was more strength in numbers and therefore decided to merge with Golden Giving.

Sue Burton, Founder of Remus Horse Sanctuary comments, “As a charity, we are always looking at new platforms to help with our fundraising activities and Golden Giving offers many solutions including online tickets, raffles, contactless donations and memberships just to name a few.

“We particularly like their ethos of #EthicalGiving and we’re still finding out the many ways in which Golden Giving can help us!”

You can donate via Golden Giving here, or for further information, visit www.remussanctuary.org or contact Sue Burton on tel: 01277 356191.

Go on, give us a smile!

Does your horse or pony love a good fuss?

We take enrichment very seriously at Remus – it’s all about enhancing an animal’s physical, social and mental environment. One way we do this is through holistic therapies, such as Aromatherapy, Shiatsu, Reiki and Bach flower remedies, which all of the horses love.

But there is also a much simpler way to enrich our horses’ lives, without the need for training or specialists… grooming! A recent study in France has found that horses prefer gentle stroking and attention, compared to a standard, all over groom. The researchers found that they enjoy it so much it actually makes them ‘smile’. The facial expressions they produce are thought to be a ‘more sensitive’ reflection of how they are feeling than their behaviour is.

We spend time with our horses every day by stroking, talking and just interacting with them on a one-to-one basis. Gentle grooming is great for circulation and relaxation – and they just love it.

You can ready more about the study in this article from Horse & Hound.

Co-op Members Care About Remus Horse Sanctuary

Sue Burton, the Founder at Remus Horse Sanctuary, is delighted to announce that the Co-op Local Community Fund is now supporting the charity through to 26 October 2019.

The project supported by the Co-op Local Community Fund is to buy some replacement field shelters – which cost £4,500 each – so that the charity’s animals can shelter during sudden inclement weather such as the Beast of the East, gales, flooding which is common-place in the local area and the extreme heat experienced during the Summer of 2018.

The stores in the community local to the Sanctuary include:

Store Name Store Postcode Business Unit
Billericay Queens Park CM12 0UA Food
Billericay CM12 0RP Food
Billericay CM12 9BQ Funeralcare

Every time a Co-op member shops at the Co-op, 1% of what they spend on Co-op branded products and services helps fund community projects. Members can shop at any Co-op Group stores across the UK to raise money for the cause – it is not just restricted to the local stores mentioned.

The Co-op Local Community Fund helps support local projects that the Co-op members care about. Since its launch in 2017, Co-op members have raised £39 million pounds for over 12,000 local causes.

Sue Burton said, “We’re absolutely delighted that Remus Horse Sanctuary will now be able to access this funding opportunity and thank everyone involved for their support.”

Members can choose which causes to support by signing into their membership account or by calling the membership helpline on 0800 023 4708. For further information, please visit the Co-op web page at: https://membership.coop.co.uk/causes/22277.

Snug as a bug?

There has been a lot of talk and debate online over the last few months about rugging our horses. Some think horses should be kept naturally while others wouldn’t dream of not using a rug, but for many owners it causes a daily headache and unwanted addiction to our preferred weather app! The general consensus is that we will do what is best for our own horses, but do we fully consider all of the contributing factors?

With milder winters (last year’s Beast from the East excluded!) and different daily routines for different horses, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach and the old temptation to dig out the heavyweight in December and leave him in it until March will not do!

This article from Horse & Hound helpfully sets out all the main points that owners need to consider. It suggests that “most horses will not need rugging until temperatures dip to 5-10°C.” Of course, older horses like we have here at Remus may need rugging sooner to help them keep warm, while those suffering from conditions such as Cushings will get too hot in the lightest of rugs due to their very thick coats.

Whilst we’re talking about keeping horses warm, please do take a look at our Winter Feed Appeal. Your support would be greatly appreciated!

Winter Feed Appeal

You can help hundreds of horses like Daisy (pictured) survive this winter by supporting our 2018 Winter Feed Appeal.

Many horses will die this winter without food. We can help them, but we need your donations to help us buy the sheer volume of hay that is always required. We cannot afford to buy the lorry loads of hay to deliver out, without your support.

In the picture, Daisy is safe, warm and fed, now happily residing at Remus Horse Sanctuary – she is one of eight horses that we rescued in the summer of 2018. Two of those horses were left out in the heatwave with no food, water or shelter; two horses were kept in a cage, again with no food or water; four stallions had been kept in closed dirty stables for two years… Can you picture the horror of that situation?

Sadly, it’s one that many, many foals and horses experience and will die without our assistance. The cold winter months will make any situation worse and we will need to get food and water out to them regularly to avoid starvation and ultimately death. We will try to deliver as many lorry-loads of hay to those horses that need it, but it will set the Sanctuary back many thousands of pounds. We need your help to raise those funds.

At present, there are more than 7,000 horses at risk in the UK and the welfare crisis in this country continues to escalate year on year with little or no progress – when the mares foal, the problem doubles and so on and so forth each year.

The news regularly features horses that are victims of physical and mental abuse and we continue to receive calls daily throughout the year. Keeping an animal fed over winter will give it a chance to thrive into spring. Forage also helps a horse keep warm. Without the Sanctuary’s help, many animals will die a slow, painful and unnecessary death.

Please, help us to help them! You can make a donation on our JustGiving page or buy hay and other food stuffs on our website.

Thank you so much for your support. It means the world to us and our animals and we look forward to seeing you again for our first Open Day in May.

Christmas Greetings!

Once again the year is drawing to a close and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your friendship and support over the past 12 months.

Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

With best wishes, from the Humans and Animals at Remus Horse Sanctuary

Co-op Supports Remus Horse Sanctuary

We mentioned back in October that we had been chosen for the next round of the Co-op Local Community Funding and we can see from the website that funds are already being raised!

What is the Co-op Local Community Fund

The Co-op Local Community Fund helps to support local projects that the Co-op members care about. Since its launch in 2017, Co-op members have raised £39 million pounds for over 12,000 local causes!

We’re absolutely delighted that Remus Horse Sanctuary will now be able to access this funding opportunity.

How the fund works

Every time a Co-op member shops at the Co-op, 1% of what they spend on Co-op branded products and services helps fund community projects. Members can shop at any Co-op Group stores across the UK to raise money for the cause – we understand its not just restricted to the local stores.

Members can choose which causes to support by signing into their membership account or by calling the membership helpline on 0800 023 4708. Our cause will be available for members to select until November 2019.

Our cause

Every cause has a page on the Co-op membership website and ours is no exception! This includes information about our cause and the project we want to complete – in this instance we would like to buy some replacement field shelters costing £4,500 each, so our animals can shelter during sudden inclement weather – such as the gales, flooding and extreme heat that we’ve experience over the past few years.

You can find out more here.

Our local stores

The stores in our community are:

Store Name Store Address   Store Postcode Business Unit
Billericay Queens Park Billericay CM12 0UA Food
Billericay Billericay CM12 0RP Food
Billericay Billericay CM12 9BQ Funeralcare

Please do support Remus Horse Sanctuary and share our cause on Twitter quoting #TheCoopWay!
