Make a Difference: Giving Tuesday 2025
As the noise of Black Friday (month) and Cyber Monday fades, many of us welcome a calmer, more thoughtful moment. Giving Tuesday. on 2 December, offers exactly that. It is a day to pause, reflect and choose kindness. Instead of filling shopping baskets, we are invited to lift up a cause we care about and to make a genuine difference!
For Remus Horse Sanctuary, Giving Tuesday is a lifeline. Animals like Holly and Davey mentioned here rely on the compassion and generosity of people like you who believe that every horse, pony and donkey – and indeed every animal – deserves safety and care.
Today, we hope you will join us in making a difference.
What is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a global day of generosity following the shopping rush of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It arrived in the UK in 2014 and is now coordinated by the Chartered Institute of Fundraising. You can read more about the movement online.
Giving Tuesday encourages everyone to give in whatever way they can, whether through donations, volunteering, sharing a cause online or simply spreading kindness. According to research highlighted by Civil Society, Giving Tuesday has become one of the biggest donation days in the festive season.
At a time when we, like many charities, are facing rising costs and growing demand, this collective moment of generosity truly matters and really does make a difference.
Holly’s Story: From Fear to Flourishing
Watch Holly’s video monologue, by Sam Vize, filmed at our Red Carpet Gala Evening: youtube.com/shorts/aXNq_bG2NNY When Holly arrived at Remus, she was frightened, underweight and struggling. Her past had left her wary of people – the vets believe she was deliberately blinded – and in desperate need of patient and skilled care. Thanks to the dedication of our team and the kindness of our supporters, Holly has slowly regained trust and confidence.
Her gentle nature is now shining through. She enjoys calm grooming, soft bedding, nutritious feed and the simple pleasure of safety. Holly’s progress shows what is possible when compassion leads the way.
But it also reminds us that there are many more horses still waiting for help.
Davey’s Journey: A Donkey Who Learned to Trust Again
Watch Davey’s video monologue, by Tim Wood, filmed at our Red Carpet Gala Evening: youtube.com/shorts/Dn3XqR0FyZc
Davey came to Remus withdrawn and weak, his coat crawling with lice. After years of neglect he was nervous and lacking confidence. It quickly became apparent that Davey had a life-threatening penile tumour and was in urgent need of radical surgery to save his live. It took time, routine, patience and specialist care for him to feel safe again, but slowly Davey began to trust.
Now he enjoys gentle attention, regular meals, proper hoof care and the comfort of companionship. His transformation is heartwarming, and a reminder that no animal is beyond hope.
Davey is living proof that rescue, rehabilitation and love can rebuild a life.
Why Giving Tuesday Matters to Animals Like Holly and Davey
After the intensity of November’s shopping season, Giving Tuesday feels like calm after the storm. Instead of focusing on what we can buy, it invites us to focus on what we can change.
For Remus, your support funds essential care such as:
- Feed and hay
- Veterinary treatment
- Farrier visits
- Warm rugs and shelter
- Rehabilitation and long-term care
Every pound makes a difference. Together we can ensure that animals who have suffered neglect or abandonment find safety, care and the chance to thrive.
How You Can Make a Difference Today
- Donate via our website: https://remussanctuary.enthuse.com/donate#!/
- Share Holly’s and Davey’s videos with your friends and family
- Follow and support us on social media
- Consider becoming a member or sponsor one of our animals
Your generosity, no matter the size, will help us reach the next animal in need.
Thank You for Supporting Remus this Giving Tuesday
Holly and Davey are only two of the many animals whose lives have been transformed by the kindness of our supporters and the team at Remus Horse Sanctuary. With your support this Giving Tuesday, we can continue this life saving work and offer hope to the horses, ponies and donkeys who need us most.
Please make a difference today. Your support truly matters.
Why Giving Tuesday Matters for Remus Horse Sanctuary
Giving Tuesday, on 3 December this year, a global day of generosity, is an incredible opportunity to come together and make a real difference. At Remus Horse Sanctuary, we rely on the kindness of supporters like you to continue our vital work of rescuing and rehabilitating neglected and abused animals.
This year, we’re inviting you to participate in Giving Tuesday through one (or more!) five impactful ways. Every act of generosity, big or small, helps transform lives—not just for the animals we care for but for our community as well.
Five Ways to Give on Giving Tuesday
1. Give Your Time or Talent
Do you have a few hours to spare? Volunteering at Remus Horse Sanctuary can be incredibly rewarding. From helping with animal care to offering your professional skills in marketing, fundraising, or admin, your time and expertise can make a lasting impact. Please complete and return the application form.
2. Give Your Voice
Support us by speaking up! Share our story on social media, sign petitions for better animal welfare laws, or talk to your friends about the Sanctuary’s mission. Raising awareness helps us reach more people who care about protecting vulnerable animals.
3. Give Money
Every donation counts. Whether you can contribute a little or a lot, your support directly funds the care, feeding, and medical treatment of the horses and animals at our Sanctuary. Consider setting up a regular or one-time donation this Giving Tuesday.
4. Give Goods
Have items you no longer need? Donating goods like clothes, toys, or food parcels to a local charity or food bank is a wonderful way to give back. If you’d like to donate directly to Remus, we welcome specific items such as horse feed or bedding which you can purchase directly from our Amazon Wish List or via our online shop. Additionally, we can pretty much recycle anything nowadays, visit our ‘How you can Help’ page on our website to view the options.
5. Give Yourself a Challenge
Why not take on a personal challenge for a great cause? Whether it’s a sponsored walk, run, or even hosting an event, challenging yourself can inspire others to contribute to the Sanctuary’s mission. Decide on your challenge and get fundraising today – it’s really easy to get started!
Your Support Saves Lives
Generosity doesn’t just happen on Giving Tuesday, but this special day provides an opportunity to amplify your impact. By giving in one (or more!) of these five ways, you’re helping us continue to provide a safe and loving environment for animals who have suffered unimaginable hardship.
Let’s make this Giving Tuesday a day to remember for the animals who rely on us. Thank you for your support!

Giving Tuesday 28 November 2023
This year, Giving Tuesday takes place on Tuesday 28 November 2023.
Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving, a day to do something for charities and – if we may be so bold – specifically for Remus Horse Sanctuary. You can give your time, give some money, donate something, buy something, or campaign for something. Giving Tuesday is one day to make a world of difference and all we’re asking is for you to do something!
If you haven’t already got your Giving Tuesday ‘something’ planned, here are 10 last minute ideas to help you make a difference! Don’t forget to share your ‘something’ on social media, use the #GivingTuesday hashtag and tag Remus Horse Sanctuary. You’ll find the links to all of our social media channels below.
- Browse our wish lists. There’s always something we need here at Remus, whether it’s food for the animals, treats or medical supplies. Browse our wish list. ‘Tis the season – buy something for Remus.
- Fundraise on our behalf. This year we have been celebrating our 40th anniversary. Have you signed up to our 40th Anniversary Challenge? All you have to do is fundraise £40 for us. If only 1000 people took part, we would raise a massive £40,000!
- Write to your MP. Earlier this year we launched our #BornToDie campaign. Please write to your MP and ask for change. Please remember, always be polite and respectful. Find your local MP and just pop in your county or postcode, or the name of your MP if you know it. This will provide you with both an email and a postal address. It only takes a few minutes.
- Give some money. Make a donation to Remus to help us through the winter months.
- Charity Christmas cards. Buy your Christmas cards from our online charity shop this year, or donate the cost of the cards and postage instead. Remember to let all your friends and family know via text message if you’re not sending cards this year – you don’t want to disappoint Great Aunt Molly!
- Sign up to Give as you Live. Give as you Live Online generates charitable giving from your everyday shopping and enables you to raise money every time you shop online – from groceries, fashion, gifts and holidays! And it won’t cost you a penny extra.
- Volunteer. You may not be able to give your time regularly, but perhaps you can help out at the odd event, or perhaps micro-volunteering might be more your thing!
- Give a charity gift this year as a present. Visit our online charity shop, we have lots of charity gifts to choose from, or why not surprise someone by sponsoring one of our animals as a truly unique gift.
- Become a member. Your Membership is hugely important to the Sanctuary, the financial support is a major source of income for us and provides funds to enable us to continue to feed and care for the animals here. It also supports our welfare work in the wider horse community in Essex and beyond.
- Talk about Giving Tuesday. Tell your family and friends about Giving Tuesday, challenge them to do something on the day. Together we can make a world of difference. #GivingTuesday

Today’s the Day to Make a Difference
Giving Tuesday is no longer just around the corner!
This year we are raising funds to repair our perimeter fencing, which has started to deteriorate quite badly.
The fencing was changed from wire to post and rail about 15 years ago. Our priority is to repair or replace the perimeter fencing first, in order to protect and secure the animals.
And we can’t do it without your generosity.
The Giving Tuesday campaign began in America in 2012 as a way to give back after the well-known shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It was brought to the UK by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in 2014 with the aim of encouraging people to think of others in the run-up to Christmas. The campaign is now coordinated in the UK by the Chartered Institute of Fundraising.
It’s become a global phenomenon; #GivingTuesday has broken successive world records for the most money donated online to charity. Leading charities and brands support the day including Natwest Group, PayPal and Salesforce. And, in 2020, #GivingTuesday was the top trending item on UK Twitter and generated more than 360 million impressions. In the UK, more than £20 million was raised in online donations, more than ever before.
Please visit our JustGiving page to learn more and make your donation online > https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/RemusFencing.
Alternatively, if you prefer, please call the Sanctuary on 01277 356191 to make your donation over the telephone.
Together we give.

Giving Tuesday partners increased by 19% in 2020 from the previous year, with many notable names – including one of our Patrons, well-known actress Claire King – and a considerable 678 media mentions were observed.
On the day in 2020, £14,000 was raised each minute to support good causes, with a total overall donation amount of £20.2 million – This figure increased by £6 million from the previous year. Throughout the day, Giving Tuesday was trending on Twitter, amassing 360 million impressions.

“This year, alongside the encouragement for people to give and support charities, Giving Tuesday will be celebrating our shared pride in the amazing generosity that we see all around us – showcasing all the different ways people support charities and communities as well as highlighting the difference that support makes.”
Sue Burton, founder of Remus Horse Sanctuary adds: “With the challenges that everyone has felt and continues to experience this year, Giving Tuesday is a great moment for us to come together to remember, share, and celebrate the causes we care about and the things we value.
“The generosity of our supporters never ceases to amaze me. Without them, our work would be impossible. I thank each and every one of them – however they are able to help us.”

Help Remus Bounce Back for #GivingTuesday
Remus Horse Sanctuary joins #GivingTuesday 2021, the global day of generosity taking place on 30 November.
Remus Horse Sanctuary is thrilled to announce that we’re one of the thousands of organisations taking part in this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign, to be held on 30 November 2021.
Brought to the UK in 2014 by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), this year #GivingTuesday offers the opportunity to give back to good causes, either by donating to charity, reaffirming commitment to a cause, volunteering time or supporting others by simply helping a friend, neighbour or family member.
In the face of financial and social challenges as traditional fundraising opportunities have been shut off, like many charities, Remus Horse Sanctuary continues to suffer due to the impact of Covid-19.
To make a fee-free donation to Remus Horse Sanctuary, please visit: www.justgiving.com/rmhs.
Founder Sue Burton believes that the funding gap is somewhere in excess of £400,000 for events and fundraising activities cancelled over the past 18 months.
Giving Tuesday is a chance to secure our future in the post-pandemic world.
All of the animals here at the Sanctuary have been rescued. Our work is similar to that of a hospice – we give the animals the very best of care. We help the younger ones to recover and to develop into happy adults and the older ones to rest and recuperate. Nothing is asked of our animals at all – they are just loved and cared for. Holistic therapies also play a big part at the Sanctuary.
“It’s not always physical and mental abuse”, says Sue, “sometimes, it’s just plain ignorance, which I find unfathomable in this digital age, when so much information is available for free online. Some people just don’t care.”
In 2020 #GivingTuesday was the top trending item on UK Twitter and generated more than 360 million impressions. In the UK, more than £20 million was raised in online donations, more than ever before.
To make a fee-free donation to Remus Horse Sanctuary, please visit: www.justgiving.com/rmhs.
“The past 18 months have been the toughest I’ve known them. The majority of animals we rescue are malnourished, riddled with worms, diseased and worse. We’ve seen horses and ponies too weak to stand, covered in acid, and blinded.
“As a result, our biggest expense, other than food obviously, is vets bills and medication. So the sheer lack of fundraising over such a long period of time has taken more than just a strain on us!”
Andy Frain, #GivingTuesday UK Lead at the CAF, adds: “Giving Tuesday is a great chance to Give Back to the charities and causes that we care about and thank them for overcoming some immense challenges over the course of this pandemic.
“People can Give in so many ways and we’re always amazed at the diversity of people’s generosity – whether it is donating money, volunteering time or just amplifying your support for a charity, any act of Giving can make all the difference to a cause you care about.”
