First Open Day for 2019 on Early May Bank Holiday Weekend

The humans at Remus Horse Sanctuary are looking forward to welcoming visitors to the Sanctuary to meet the 200+ animals, for the first time this year on Sunday 5 May from 1pm to 5pm.

Parking is available on-site, with disabled access and dogs are very welcome on a lead. Admission will be charged at just £4 per adult and £2 for children.

Further Sundays during the Summer when visitors will be able to visit the Sanctuary are:

The Open Days at the Sanctuary are fun for the whole family, with bouncy castles, live performances from children’s entertainer Magic Rich, live music from Midnite Blu, delicious refreshments including gluten-free sandwiches and homemade cakes, and lots of stalls including a tombola and raffle.

The Sanctuary also hosts Afternoon Teas and Children’s Pony Days, the details for which can be found here.

Horse Charity’s Plea for Autumn Open Day

Remus Horse Sanctuary’s final Open Day of the 2018 season will take place on Sunday 7 October and feature a whole host of entertainment for children including: children’s entertainer, Magic Dave, face painting, many games and two bouncy castles; musical entertainment will be provided by local band, Midnite Blu; refreshments of sandwiches and cakes (including gluten free) will be available all afternoon; a raffle, tombola and numerous stalls will amuse the whole family.

However, its not all fun and laughter at the horse charity near Ingatestone in Essex. The summer heatwave meant that grass everywhere struggled to grow and Remus, in particular, needed to buy in food throughout those many months stretching our already limited budget. As a result, its already forecasting a need for additional financial support to get through the cold winter months.

Founder, Sue Burton, said: “We’ve never been a rich charity but just as we get our heads above water something else comes along to knock us back.

“Our work here never gets any easier – rescuing a horse is expensive and normally it’ll either be in ill health or suffering some other form of trauma. It then requires extra medical attention, round the clock care, medication and specialist food.

“Our bills seem to rise constantly, and the cold weather brought on by the winter means extra heat and extra food and nourishment for both the ill and the elderly animals. You can see why people liken us to a hospice!”

For those unable to visit on Sunday 7 October, Sue is pleading for donations to help with the task ahead, “Please help us get through another winter. I’ve given my life for the animals in our care at Remus, but we can’t continue to do it without financial support.”

Rescued Foal Joins Open Season at Remus Horse Sanctuary

Remus Horse Sanctuary is delighted to open its gates and welcome visitors to the Sanctuary for the first time this year on Sunday 3 June 2018. Visitors will also be able to meet the latest little rescued foal – Jake.

Open from 1pm to 5pm, the Sanctuary offers entertainment for the whole family including competitions and games, bouncy castles and live performances from children’s entertainer Magic Dave, music from Midnite Blu, delicious refreshments including gluten-free sandwiches and homemade cakes, lots of stalls and a raffle.

Parking is available on-site, with disabled access and dogs are welcome on a lead. Admission will be charged at just £4 per adult and £2 for children. Members of the Sanctuary will receive a discount upon presentation of their membership card.

Visitors to the Open Days will be able to meet Jake, the newest rescue at the Sanctuary [Pictured]. He was dumped behind Buttsbury Church in Essex on a Sunday evening in March and was roaming loose for some days with no fencing between him and the busy road and the swollen river.

Sue Burton, Founder of the Sanctuary said, “Jake is only a baby and when he arrived he was terrified! He is still skinny and was crawling with lice and infested with worms but such a sweetie. Because he is so feral, as are so many who are dumped now – more of the foals born to die – and indeed three died on Essex roads in March alone, it meant bringing in some veterinary experts to travel and dart him early one morning.”

We are so pleased that we were able to save him before he became another statistic. He had a very frightening few days before arrival, so we left him in a warm stable with food and water and deep bed to settle down and relax. He has now paired up with Heidi, one of the foals we rescued last summer, who at two months old was found tethered with her two baby friends, one of which was so poorly he died. They are both getting on well and it’s so nice to see them both relaxing and playing in the fields together.”

Life at the Sanctuary is not getting any easier, so we try to make it as simple as possible for you to help us here at the Charity, from supporting our events, to donating clothing and bric-a-brac, to volunteering. Food & Donations

It’s that time of year when donations go down but our costs rise as we need more bedding, food and forage on site and need to try to get forage and water out to as many horses left tethered on the sides of the road as we can. Can you help us with a donation or food?

Also at this time of year we use more money on pain relief for the old horses and ponies who have arthritis and joint issues and rugs for all the horses, especially in the severe cold spells like we’ve recently experienced, so it really is a very costly time for us.

These efforts can mean the difference between life and death, so thank you for any help that you may be able to offer!

Afternoon Teas & Open Days

Looking ahead to the warmer weather, both of these events are very good for Remus from a promotional and a fundraising perspective but we are desperate for people to join our Afternoon Tea Team and our Open Day Teams.

There are seven Afternoon Teas planned for this year and six Open Days. If you can help at either, or would like more information to help promote these events, please do call or email the Sanctuary.

Recycling

Do you have any unwanted presents – Christmas or Birthday – that you no longer want or require or any good quality bric-a-brac? If so we would love to have them at the Sanctuary to help raise funds for the horses.

Don’t forget we can turn your used stamps, old coins, foreign currency, old phones, old clothes, printer cartridges, any World War memorabilia, and books into cash for the animals!
